Green Cards
Lottery
Each year, the
U.S. State Department holds a lottery by which it randomly selects
applicants from around the world to receive 55,000 green cards.
If you receive a green card through the lottery you will be permitted
to permanently live and work in the United States. In addition,
a successful applicant's spouse and unmarried minor children will
also be issued green cards.
There is no
fee required to submit a green card lottery application and people
born in certain countries are not eligible to receive a green card
through the lottery. In recent years people born in Canada, China,
Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica,
Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom and Vietnam
have not been eligible for the green card lottery.
